Iman Shumpert is an American professional basketball player hailing from Oak Park, Illinois. He last played as a shooting guard for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He joined the Rockets in February 2019 but has since become a highly sought-after free agent. He is known for his defensive excellence, reliability as a wing and impressive shooting ability, particularly from the three-point mark.
Shumpert declared for the NBA draft in 2011, thereby foregoing his final year of college eligibility. He was drafted with the 17th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the New York Knicks, and was an All-Rookie Team honouree in his first season. After four seasons with the Knicks he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, with whom he won an NBA Championship over the Golden State Warriors in 2016, alongside legendary superstar forward LeBron James. After four seasons with the Cavaliers he joined Sacramento Kings for a season, before his most recent stint at Houston Rockets. His other career highlights include a place in the McDonald’s All-American game in 2008, being named in the ACC All-Freshman Team in 2009, and in the ACC All-Defensive Team and Second-team All-ACC in 2011.
Outside of basketball, Shumpert has dabbled in rap music, releasing the song ‘Knicks Anthem’ and the mixtape ‘Th3 #Post90s’ in 2012. In 2013, he released the song “Dear Kendrick” in response to a Kendrick Lamar verse in the song ‘Control’ by Big Sean. Most recently, he released an EP titled ‘Substance Abuse’ in 2018.
