Jamal Murray was born on February 23, 1997, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. His father, Roger Murray, who had experience in track and field and basketball, introduced him to the sport at a young age. By age three, Jamal was playing basketball for hours, and at six, he competed in a league designed for ten-year-olds. Murray’s early training included various basketball drills and kung fu exercises, emphasizing meditation, which he credits for influencing his approach to the game. He attended Grand River Collegiate Institute before transferring to Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario, where his father served as an assistant coach. During his high school career, Murray gained national recognition, being named MVP of the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic International Game and the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit, scoring a game-high 30 points in the latter. He also received the MVP award at the 2015 BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game, highlighting his status as a top high school player in Canada.
Murray committed to the University of Kentucky to play college basketball for the 2015-16 season. In his freshman year, he averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, with a 40.8% three-point shooting percentage. His scoring average set a Kentucky freshman record and was the highest for any player during coach John Calipari’s tenure. He was recognized as a third-team All-American by the Associated Press, and named to the All-SEC First Team and SEC All-Freshman Team. After one season, Murray declared for the NBA draft, being selected seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2016. He signed his rookie contract on August 9, 2016.
His professional career with the Denver Nuggets began in the 2016–2017 season, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. During the 2019-2020 season, Murray played a critical role in the Nuggets’ playoff run, leading them to the Western Conference Finals. This included multiple 40- and 50-point performances and leading comeback victories from 3-1 deficits. In the 2022-2023 season, after recovering from a torn ACL, he made his return and was a key player in the Denver Nuggets securing their first NBA championship. He set records for most assists in his first four NBA Finals games and became one of only four players to average at least 20 points and 10 assists in an NBA Finals series.
