Matthew Robert Bonner is a former professional basketball player from the United States. Red Rocket, Red Mamba, and The Sandwich Hunter are some of his nicknames. Bonner attended the University of Florida and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the 45th overall choice in the NBA draft in 2003. He was later traded to the Toronto Raptors. Bonner was a member of the Pallacanestro Messina of the Italian league from 2003 to 2004, the Toronto Raptors from 2004 to 2006, and the San Antonio Spurs from 2006 to 2017.
He was Fourth-team Parade All-American in 1999, Third-team All-SEC in 2001, Second-team All-SEC in 2002, and First-team All-SEC in 2003. Bonner was also honored as the AP All-American twice and an Academic All-American twice in 2002 and 2003. Bonner has won the NBA title two times. Bonner earned his first NBA championship with the Spurs in 2007, when they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his second with the Spurs in 2014, when they defeated the Miami Heat.
Bonner appeared in the humor web series Fundamentals of the Game with Coach B, which was hosted on the Spurs’ official website in 2011. Bonner competed in the 2013 NBA Three-Point Shootout during All-Star Weekend after a social media campaign by his brother Luke. He advanced to the final with a score of 19 in the first round, defeating Ryan Anderson and Stephen Curry. As a Spurs TV pundit, Bonner now provides colored commentary and analysis.
