About

Imogen Gay Poots was born in Hammersmith, London, England, on June 3, 1989. She is the daughter of Fiona (Goodall), a journalist, and Trevor Poots, a television producer. Educated at Bute House Preparatory School for Girls, Queen’s Gate School for Girls, and Latymer Upper School, all in London, she initially considered a career as a veterinary surgeon. However, after fainting during a veterinary surgery internship, she shifted her focus, attending the Youngblood Theatre Company, where she developed an interest in acting. She obtained three A grades at A-level and was accepted into the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2008, deferring her admission to pursue acting professionally.

Her screen career began with a role in the British medical drama “Casualty” in 2004, followed by a non-speaking appearance in “V for Vendetta” (2005). Her breakout role came at 17, when Juan Carlos Fresnadillo cast her as Tammy in the horror film “28 Weeks Later” (2007). This marked a significant turning point, leading to roles in films such as “Cracks” (2009), “Centurion” (2010), and the female lead in the 2011 remake of “Fright Night.” Poots has developed her acting skills through practical experience rather than formal training, earning a reputation for being natural and compelling on screen. Over the years, she has taken on diverse characters, showcasing her range in independent films and major studio productions.

Her career progression includes notable performances in “A Late Quartet” (2012) alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman, “Greetings from Tim Buckley” (2012), “Filth” (2013), and depicting Linda Keith in “Jimi: All Is by My Side” (2013). She also starred in “That Awkward Moment” (2014) and the action film “Need for Speed” (2014). In 2016, she played Kelly Ann in the Showtime series “Roadies.” Poots continued to earn critical acclaim for her roles, including “Vivarium” (2019) and “The Father” (2020), where she played Laura. Her stage work includes “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 2017 and “Belleville” at the Donmar Warehouse. In 2022, she joined the cast of the Prime Video series “Outer Range” as Autumn and portrayed Lady Rose Dugdale in the 2023 film “Baltimore.”
