Jack O’Connell was born on August 1, 1990, in Alvaston, Derby, England. He began his acting career in 2005, appearing as Connor Yates in an episode of the television series ‘Doctors’. The same year, he landed a recurring role in ‘The Bill’. His film debut came in 2006, portraying Pukey Nicholls in ‘This Is England’. O’Connell gained significant recognition for his role as James Cook in the popular teen drama ‘Skins’, appearing in 18 episodes between 2009 and 2013. During this period, he also featured in films such as ‘Eden Lake’ (2008) and ‘Harry Brown’ (2009), and television productions like ‘The Runaway’ (2010).
O’Connell’s career continued to gain momentum with lead roles in critically acclaimed independent films. In 2013, he earned widespread praise for his portrayal of a jailed teenager in ‘Starred Up’ and followed this with a performance as a British soldier in Belfast in the 2014 film ”71′. His Hollywood debut was as the Greek soldier Calisto in ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ in 2014. That same year, he took on the lead role of Olympic distance runner and World War II POW Louis Zamperini in Angelina Jolie-directed war drama ‘Unbroken’. For his work in ‘Starred Up’ and ‘Unbroken’, O’Connell received the Breakthrough Award from the National Board of Review and the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2015.
His career has seen him collaborate with notable figures and appear in diverse projects, including ‘Money Monster’ (2016) alongside George Clooney and Julia Roberts, the Netflix miniseries ‘Godless’ (2017), and the biographical drama ‘Trial by Fire’ (2018).
