Born on September 11, 1988, in Goyang, South Korea, Jain Kim began her climbing career at the age of 12, demonstrating early talent stemming from a mountaineering family background. Her active competition career started in 2002, and by July 2004, at just 15 years old, she debuted in the Lead Climbing World Cup. Her rapid ascent through the ranks saw her competing in the Bouldering World Cup by 2006, marking the beginning of a decorated career that would establish her as one of the most accomplished athletes in the sport. Kim’s early achievements included multiple Asian Championship titles in lead climbing and bouldering.
Throughout her career, Kim has achieved significant milestones, securing three Lead Climbing World Cup titles in 2010, 2013, and 2014. She also became the Lead Climbing World Champion in 2014, a year in which she on-sighted all routes in qualifications, semi-finals, and finals. Her dominance in Asian competitions is evident with 14 Asian Championship wins across lead climbing and bouldering. Beyond competitions, she has redpointed challenging sport climbing routes graded 8c and 8c+ in Arco, Italy, including ‘Bibita Biologica’ and ‘Reini’s Vibes’. In 2017, she successfully climbed the 555-meter Lotte World Tower in Seoul.
Kim’s influence extends beyond her individual achievements. She is recognized for inspiring the growth of sport climbing in Korea, having been mentored by Go Mi-young, a pioneer in Korean climbing. Kim married Oh Young-hwan, a member of the Korean National Assembly, and welcomed a daughter in 2021. In July 2023, at 34, she became the oldest woman to win a Lead World Cup, further cementing her legacy. With retirement nearing, Kim aims for an appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, driven by a desire to honor her mentor and continue inspiring new generations of climbers.
