James Buckley was born on August 14, 1987, in Croydon, England. He developed an early interest in performing, attending stage school on weekends from the age of seven. His professional stage debut came at age 11, playing Clarence in the West End production of ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ (Aldwych Theatre, 1998), followed by a role as Gavroche in ‘Les Misérables’ (Palace Theatre, 1999). Buckley made his television debut in 2001 in the BBC sitcom ‘’Orrible’. He then appeared in several British television series such as ‘Teachers’ (2004), ‘The Bill’ (2005, 2006, 2008), ‘Holby City’ (2006), ‘Skins’ (2007), and ‘Sold’ (2007).
Buckley is most widely known for his portrayal of Jay Cartwright in the E4 sitcom ‘The Inbetweeners’ (2008–2010), a role he reprised in ‘The Inbetweeners Movie’ (2011) and ‘The Inbetweeners 2’ (2014). For his work on ‘The Inbetweeners’, he received nominations for Best TV Comedy Actor at the British Comedy Awards in 2010 and a BAFTA for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme in 2011. He also played young Del Boy in the BBC comedy-drama ‘Rock & Chips’ (2010–2011), a prequel to ‘Only Fools and Horses’. From 2016 to 2018, he starred as Brian Weaver in the comedy-fantasy series ‘Zapped’ and appeared as Brian Fitzpatrick in ‘White Gold’ (2017–2019).
In recent years, Buckley has expanded his career into digital content creation, launching a YouTube gaming channel, ‘Completed It Mate’, in 2016, and co-creating ‘At Home With The Buckleys’ with his wife, Clair, in 2020. He also co-hosts podcasts. His film roles include Luc in ‘Charlie Countryman’ (2013), Fitzie in ‘The Pyramid’ (2014), Sponge in ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ (2016), and the lead role in ‘The Comedian’s Guide to Survival’ (2016). He has also featured in ‘Doctor Who’ (2020) and the Channel 5 drama ‘Finders Keepers’ (2024). In theatre, he took on the role of Ben in the stage play ‘2:22 A Ghost Story’ from 2021 to 2022 and again in 2024. Throughout his career, he has engaged in various guest appearances on TV shows and participated in celebrity specials like ‘The Great Celebrity Bake Off for SU2C’ (2020) and ‘Celebrity Catchphrase’ (2024), where he was victorious.
