James Frain

James Frain has established a career as a versatile actor, known for portraying complex historical and dramatic figures across television, film, and theater. After being cast by director Richard Attenborough in his debut film, ‘Shadowlands’ (1993), starring opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins, James Frain went on to establish a versatile career across television, film, and theater. Early in his filmography, Frain garnered critical attention with his role as a Northern Irish terrorist in ‘Nothing Personal’ (1995). He further showcased his range in period dramas, portraying Alvaro de la Quadra in ‘Elizabeth’ (1998) opposite Cate Blanchett, and world-renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim in the Oscar-nominated film ‘Hilary and Jackie’ (1998).

His feature film credits from this period include roles in the sci-fi blockbuster ‘TRON: Legacy’ (2010) with Jeff Bridges and the romantic drama ‘Water for Elephants’ (2011) alongside Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. Demonstrating his versatility, Frain has also made notable appearances in genre roles across prominent television series. He was a DC villain, Theo Galavan/Azrael, in ‘Gotham’ (2015–2016) and a captivating vampire, Franklin Mott, in ‘True Blood’ (2010). Sci-fi audiences know him as a younger Sarek in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ (2017–2019) and Ferdinand Chevalier in ‘Orphan Black’ (2015–2017).

Most recently, Frain continued to expand his television credits with a featured role as Gideon Rydge in the NBC series ‘Quantum Leap’ (2024), further cementing his reputation for dynamic and memorable performances across diverse platforms.
