James Frain

James Frain was born on March 14, 1968, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and was raised in Stansted Mountfitchet, near Bishop’s Stortford, Essex. He attended Newport Free Grammar School and later pursued higher education in Drama and Film at the University of East Anglia. His acting training culminated with a diploma from London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. While still in his final year of drama school in 1993, Frain was cast by director Richard Attenborough in his debut film, “Shadowlands,” starring opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins. This early exposure set the foundation for a career marked by bold and intelligent performances.

Frain’s career progressed with varied roles in both film and television. He gained recognition for his portrayals of historical figures such as Thomas Cromwell in Showtime’s “The Tudors” (2007–2009), Lord Warwick ‘The Kingmaker’ in “The White Queen” (2013), and LBJ speechwriter Richard Goodwin in HBO’s “Path to War” (2002). In features, he played world-renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim in the Oscar-nominated “Hilary and Jackie” (1998) and the Spanish Ambassador in “Elizabeth” (1998) opposite Cate Blanchett. His filmography also includes roles in “TRON: Legacy” (2010) with Jeff Bridges and “Water for Elephants” (2011) alongside Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson.

Beyond historical dramas, Frain has considerable experience in genre roles, appearing as a DC villain in “Gotham” (2015–2016), a vampire in “True Blood” (2010), and as a younger Sarek in “Star Trek: Discovery” (2017–2019). His extensive theatre background includes performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Almeida, and The Royal Court in the UK. He co-starred with Ian McShane on Broadway in the 2007 production of Harold Pinter’s “The Homecoming,” for which the cast earned The Drama Critics Circle Best Ensemble Award. In 2019, he played Lionel Logue in the world premiere of “The King’s Speech” at The Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
