About

Born Timothy Francis Robbins on October 16, 1958, in West Covina, California, and raised in New York City, Tim Robbins developed an early interest in theatre. His father, Gil Robbins, was a member of the folk music group The Highwaymen, and his mother, Mary Robbins (née Bledsoe), was a musician and actress. Robbins began performing in theatre at age twelve and later studied drama at UCLA, graduating with honors in 1981. That same year, he co-founded The Actors’ Gang, an experimental theatre group in Los Angeles, which became a platform for expressing radical political observations through European avant-garde theatre forms. His early career included roles in television movies starting in 1983, with notable appearances in “St. Elsewhere” (1982) and “The Love Boat,” and films like “Fraternity Vacation” (1985) and “Top Gun” (1986).

Robbins achieved significant recognition with his portrayal of pitcher “Nuke” Laloosh in the 1988 film “Bull Durham,” where he co-starred with Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner. This period marked a transition into more prominent roles. In 1992, he starred in Robert Altman’s “The Player,” delivering a performance that earned him the Best Actor Award at Cannes. The same year, he made his directorial and screenwriting debut with “Bob Roberts,” a satirical mockumentary. His acting career continued to flourish with critically acclaimed roles such as Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994) alongside Morgan Freeman, and later as Dave Boyle in “Mystic River” (2003), for which he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Beyond acting, Robbins has a distinguished career as a director and producer. His directorial work often features strong social commentary, notably in “Dead Man Walking” (1995), a film on capital punishment starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. He also directed the historical drama “Cradle Will Rock” (1999) and has helmed episodes for television series like HBO’s “Treme” (2011-2012) and “The Brink” (2015). His recent work includes acting roles in television series such as “Silo” (2023–2025) and “Castle Rock” (2019), and films like “Dark Waters” (2019). Robbins is also recognized for his liberal activism and his commitment to arts education through The Actors’ Gang.
