Janina Gavankar

Janina Gavankar was born on November 29, 1980, in Joliet, Illinois. Her father, Ganesh “Peter” Gavankar, was a Marathi engineer from Mumbai, and her mother, Shan Demohra “Mohra” Gavankar, was of half-Marathi and half-Dutch descent from Pune; both emigrated from India to the U.S. Gavankar was trained as a pianist, vocalist, and orchestral percussionist, and she pursued theatre studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her career began in the early 2000s, leading to roles in various productions.

Throughout her career, Gavankar has taken on significant roles. She played Eva “Papi” Torres on Showtime’s “The L Word” and Shiva on “The League.” In addition to her acting, she became known in the marketing world for her role as “Ms. Dewey,” a personified search engine and virtual assistant for Microsoft. She joined the cast of “True Blood” as a shapeshifter named Luna Garza and appeared in “Arrow” as Detective McKenna Hall. Her contributions extend to video games, where she voiced and performed motion capture for Iden Versio, the protagonist of “Star Wars: Battlefront II” (2017).

Gavankar’s career has also included notable roles in recent years, such as Alison Namazi in Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Ren Bhullar in seasons 2 and 3 of ABC’s “Big Sky.” She has also diversified her work to include video game voice acting, including roles in “Far Cry 4” as Amita and Agent Kiran Estevez in “Alan Wake 2.” In addition to her on-screen and voice work, Gavankar has maintained a strong presence in the music industry, releasing her own music and collaborating on projects, while also being recognized for her early adoption and understanding of technology, notably being one of the first actresses to use Twitter.
