About

Jay Asher was born on September 30, 1975, in Arcadia, California. He pursued higher education at Cuesta Community College and later California Polytechnic State University before focusing on his writing career. Initially, Asher aimed to write children’s picture books and worked various jobs, including in a shoe store and at libraries, while developing his craft. His persistence led him to explore young adult fiction, where he would find significant success.

Asher’s career breakthrough came with the publication of “Thirteen Reasons Why” in 2007. This novel quickly became a New York Times bestseller and gained widespread recognition, selling over 2.5 million copies in the US alone. The book’s success led to its adaptation into a popular Netflix series, highlighting Asher’s ability to connect with a broad audience on significant topics. Following this, he co-authored “The Future of Us” with Carolyn Mackler and later released “What Light” in 2016, further establishing his presence in the young adult literature scene.

His works have been translated into over thirty languages, demonstrating his international impact. Asher also branched into other formats, co-writing the graphic novel “Piper” in 2017 and publishing his memoirs, “Sunny Boy: More Than a Family Story,” in the same year. These projects reflect a diverse range of narrative approaches and a continuous engagement with storytelling in various forms.
