About

Jeffrey Ross Lifschultz, born on September 13, 1965, in Newark, New Jersey, cultivated his comedic style from an early age, shaped by a challenging upbringing and complex family dynamics. After graduating from Boston University in 1987 with a B.S. in broadcasting and film, where he also worked at the university’s student-run radio station WTBU and public radio station WBUR as an audio engineer, Ross embarked on his stand-up career in 1989 following a comedy class. By 1995, he was a regular at prominent New York comedy clubs like the Comedy Cellar and Stand Up NY. The same year, the New York Friars Club invited him to participate in a roast of Steven Seagal, marking a significant turning point in his career.

Ross’s reputation grew as he became a regular at Friars Club roasts, earning him the moniker “Roastmaster General.” His breakthrough in televised roasts came with the Friars Club’s event for Drew Carey in 1998, broadcast on Comedy Central. He further solidified his place in comedy with a memorable joke at the 1999 Jerry Stiller roast, which he credits with elevating his career. In the early 2000s, Ross expanded his work to include writing for Jimmy Kimmel’s “The Man Show” and contributing punchlines to Billy Crystal’s monologue at the Oscars. Since 2005, Ross has been a consistent presence as a roaster on all Comedy Central roasts, where he became known for his provocative costumes and sharp wit when roasting various celebrities.

Beyond traditional roasts, Ross has broadened his comedic reach and impact. In 2003, he began participating in USO tours, performing stand-up for US military personnel in conflict zones like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay. His experiences during these tours were chronicled in his 2006 directorial debut, “Patriot Act: A Jeffrey Ross Home Movie,” which won Best Film at the Comedia film festival. In 2009, he released his book, “I Only Roast the Ones I Love: Busting Balls Without Burning Bridges,” sharing insights into the art of roasting. He hosted “The Burn with Jeff Ross” on Comedy Central from 2012 to 2013 and later created “Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle,” a show that has achieved international recognition. Ross has also explored social commentary through specials like “Jeff Ross Roasts Criminals,” “Jeff Ross Roasts Cops,” and “Jeff Ross Roasts The Border,” using humor to address timely societal issues. His recent work includes co-hosting the “Roast of Tom Brady” for Netflix in 2024 and debuting his one-man Broadway show, “Take A Banana For The Ride,” in 2025.
