Born on November 6, 1975, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Jeff Smith began his darts career early, participating in his first tournament, the Canada National Championships, in 1996 where he reached the semi-finals. He later won this tournament in 2008, defeating Jeff Noble. Smith’s initial foray into professional darts saw him obtain a PDC tour card in January 2011 after competing in Q School. He represented Canada at the 2013 PDC World Cup of Darts alongside John Part, a significant milestone in his early professional career. Following this, he transitioned back to the BDO circuit in 2014, securing victories at the Halifax Open and the Canadian Open, showcasing his competitive abilities across different organizations.
Smith’s career reached a pivotal point in 2015 when he qualified for the BDO World Darts Championship. He advanced to the semi-finals, notably defeating two-time semi-finalist Wesley Harms and bookmakers’ favorite Robbie Green. His impressive run concluded with a loss to eventual champion Scott Mitchell. The following year, at the 2016 BDO World Darts Championship, Smith advanced even further, reaching the final by overcoming Martin Adams and Richard Veenstra, before ultimately finishing as runner-up to Scott Waites. This performance solidified his reputation as a top-tier darts player. He also received a runner-up cheque of £35,000.
After his successful BDO run, Smith returned to the PDC circuit, making his debut at the 2018 PDC World Darts Championship as a wild card entry. He demonstrated his skill with a 170 checkout in the preliminary round against Luke Humphries. Although he failed to secure a tour card at Q-School initially, he qualified for the 2019 PDC World Darts Championship by winning the North American Championship. On January 18, 2020, Smith successfully regained his PDC Tour Card. Across his career, he has appeared five times at the PDC World Championship, consistently performing on the sport’s biggest stages. Smith consistently represents Canada at major events like the World Cup of Darts and has become a fan favorite in North American PDC events, particularly at the US Darts Masters.
