Maria Mateas

Maria Mateas was born on July 21, 1999, in Oradea, Romania, to Calin and Angela Mateas. She later moved to the United States and began her professional tennis career. Mateas showed early promise in her junior career, achieving a career-high combined ranking of 26 on the ITF Junior Circuit in April 2016. Her family has a background in tennis, with her older brother, Catalin, also being a tennis player, and her father, Calin Mateas, working as a tennis professional with over 25 years of experience in developing junior players.

Mateas made her WTA Tour main-draw debut as a wildcard at the 2016 Bank of the West Classic. She continued to compete on the ITF Circuit, securing her first singles title at the ITF Fort Worth, United States, in August 2018. Mateas achieved her Grand Slam tournament debut in mixed doubles at the 2023 US Open, partnering with Mackenzie McDonald. She also made her singles debut at the WTA 1000 level in the same year, qualifying for the main draw of the 2023 Guadalajara Open. Her career-high WTA singles ranking reached No. 190 on August 26, 2024.

A significant milestone in her career includes winning the 2024 ITF Championnats Banque Nationale de Granby, a W75 tournament. Mateas achieved her first WTA Tour main-draw victories at the 2025 Morocco Open, where she progressed to the quarterfinals after defeating Elizabeth Mandlik and Arantxa Rus. She currently holds three ITF singles titles and six ITF doubles titles. Her consistent performance and progression have established her as a developing presence in professional tennis.
