Katerina Maleeva

Katerina Georgieva Maleeva, born on May 7, 1969, in Sofia, Bulgaria, developed her tennis prowess under the guidance of her mother, Yuliya Berberyan, a prominent Bulgarian tennis player from the 1960s. Katerina, alongside her sisters Manuela and Magdalena, all became top 10 players on the WTA Tour, forming a notable tennis family. Katerina turned professional in 1984 and began accumulating a strong record in both singles and doubles.

Throughout her career, Maleeva secured 11 singles and two doubles titles on the WTA Tour. A notable milestone was her career-high singles ranking of world No. 6, achieved on July 9, 1990. She reached the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slam singles tournaments: the Australian Open (1990, 1991), French Open (1990), Wimbledon (1990, 1992), and US Open (1988, 1993). In doubles, she reached the final of the 1994 US Open with partner Robin White. Maleeva also represented Bulgaria in the Fed Cup with a singles record of 20–9 and a doubles record of 9–13.

Maleeva participated in three consecutive Olympic Games: 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, and 1996 Atlanta. She concluded her professional tennis career in 1997. Following her retirement, Katerina Maleeva married Georgi Stoimenov and they have two children, residing in Sofia.
