Katerina Maleeva

Katerina Maleeva, a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player, emerged from a family deeply rooted in the sport. Born in Sofia, she is the second of three sisters, all of whom became WTA top 10 players, thanks to the guidance of their mother, Yuliya Berberyan, a prominent tennis figure in the 1960s. Katerina’s early exposure to tennis laid the foundation for her successful career, where she won eleven singles and two doubles titles on the WTA Tour, peaking at a career-high ranking of No. 6 in 1990.

Throughout her career, Maleeva faced fierce competition, including a memorable victory over Steffi Graf in the 1984 US Open junior semifinals. This win not only showcased her talent but also highlighted the competitive spirit that defined her journey. Despite the challenges of balancing family life and professional commitments, Katerina’s dedication to the sport never wavered. After marrying Georgi Stoimenov in 1994, she continued to excel on the court until her retirement in 1997.
