Jeffrey Holland

Jeffrey Holland achieved widespread recognition for his portrayal of Spike Dixon, the comic at Maplin’s holiday camp in the BBC sitcom ‘Hi-de-Hi!’, a role he maintained for 58 episodes from 1980 to 1988. His career, marked by memorable characters across decades of British television and stage, began with a significant foundation in theatrical and early screen work. Holland made his stage debut at the Alexandra Theatre in 1967 in ‘No Fear or Favour’ and secured his first speaking television role in an episode of ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ in 1974. A pivotal collaboration with writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft commenced when he took over the role of Private Walker in the Dad’s Army Stage Show, which ultimately led to him becoming a key figure in Croft’s repertory company and landing his iconic ‘Hi-de-Hi!’ role.

He later starred as James Twelvetrees in ‘You Rang, M’Lord?’ from 1988 to 1993, a role that garnered particular popularity in Central and Eastern Europe. Holland’s continued collaboration with Croft, Perry, and Lloyd extended to roles in ‘Are You Being Served?’ and ‘Oh, Doctor Beeching!’, where he portrayed Cecil Parkin from 1995 to 1997, further solidifying his status in classic British sitcoms. Demonstrating his versatile range beyond sitcoms, Holland participated in ‘Goon Again’ in 2001, the 50th-anniversary celebration of ‘The Goon Show’, where he took on parts originally played by Peter Sellers. In 2011, he appeared in ‘Coronation Street’ as Clive Drinkwater, followed by a role in the 2012 film ‘Run for Your Wife’.

In 2021, he co-starred in the television pilot ‘Simply Ken’ alongside his wife, Judy Buxton. Further showcasing his extensive career, Holland’s memoir, ‘The First Rule Of Comedy…! Memories And Moments’, co-authored with Robert Ross, is slated for publication in February 2025, offering an in-depth look into his enduring contributions to entertainment.
