Born on December 21, 1984, in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, Mahira Hafeez Khan embarked on her career in 2006 as a VJ on MTV Pakistan, hosting the show ‘Most Wanted’. She later hosted ‘Weekends with Mahira’ on AAG TV in 2008. Her acting debut came in 2011 with the film ‘Bol’, which became one of Pakistan’s highest-grossing films. The same year, she made her television drama debut in ‘Neeyat’. Khan’s breakthrough came with the lead role in the highly successful romantic television drama ‘Humsafar’ in 2011, a series many credit with reviving the local drama industry. She continued to star in popular television dramas such as ‘Shehr-e-Zaat’ (2012) and ‘Sadqay Tumhare’ (2014), earning multiple best actress awards.
Mahira Khan established herself further in cinema with lead roles in Pakistani productions like ‘Bin Roye’ (2015) and ‘Ho Mann Jahan’ (2016). In 2017, she made her Hindi film debut opposite Shahrukh Khan in ‘Raees’, becoming the first Pakistani actress to enter Bollywood’s ‘100 crore’ club. Her performance in Shoaib Mansoor’s ‘Verna’ (2017), which addressed themes of rape and misogyny, earned her critical acclaim. She later starred in films such as ‘7 Din Mohabbat In’ (2018) and ‘Superstar’ (2019), her highest-grossing film domestically at the time. Her recent work includes the action-comedy ‘Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad’ (2022) and ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ (2022), alongside producing the web-series ‘Baarwan Khiladi’ (2022).
Beyond her acting career, Mahira Khan is an advocate for social causes, actively promoting women’s rights and raising awareness about child abuse and rape issues. She has worked with UNICEF since 2019 and was appointed a national and global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Afghan refugees in Pakistan the same year. Khan is a prominent celebrity endorser for various brands and has represented Pakistan at international events like the Cannes Film Festival and Paris Fashion Week. In 2018, she co-launched the clothing line and media production company, Mashion, with her brother Hasan, focusing on empowering Pakistani women and mental health awareness. She married businessman Salim Karim in 2023.
