Jenia Grebennikov was born on August 13, 1990, in Rennes, France. His father, Boris Grebennikov, was a professional volleyball player and coach, which led Jenia to spend his early years around volleyball courts. He initially engaged in both ice hockey and volleyball before committing to volleyball. Grebennikov played for his local club, Rennes Volley 35, for the first decade of his career, securing his first national title, the French Cup, in 2012. His professional career continued its upward trajectory, marked by individual distinctions such as Best Libero of the French Championship in 2011 and 2012, and Most Valuable Player in 2012.
Grebennikov’s international club career began in Germany with VfB Friedrichshafen in 2013, where he won a national championship and two cup titles over two seasons. In 2015, he moved to Italy, joining Cucine Lube Civitanova. During his three seasons with the team, he earned a silver medal at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship and multiple medals in the European Champions League, where he was consistently named to the Dream Team as best libero in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He also clinched the Italian Championship in 2017 and the Italian Cup in 2016. In 2018, he transferred to Diatec Trentino, immediately contributing to their victory at the 2018 FIVB Club World Championship, where he was again recognized on the Dream Team.
His tenure with the French national team, which began in 2011, has been equally successful. Grebennikov earned gold medals at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League and the 2015 European Championship, where he was honored as Best Libero. He continued this success with a bronze at the 2016 World League and another gold in 2017. He was a silver medalist in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League in 2018, once more receiving Best Libero honors. He secured gold medals at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, recognized as Best Libero at both events. Grebennikov later joined Azimut Modena for the 2020-21 season and then Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2021, continuing to perform at an elite level.
