About

Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born on August 4, 1989, in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Her father, Ferdy, is of Indonesian descent, and her mother, Therese, is an Indigenous Australian from the Kuku Yalanji people. Mauboy’s musical journey began early, singing in her church choir with her grandmother. At age fourteen, she won the Telstra Road to Tamworth competition in 2004, which led to a recording deal with Sony Music Australia and the release of a country-inspired rendition of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” Disappointment followed when the song was unsuccessful, leading her back to Darwin before emerging on a larger stage.

Mauboy gained national recognition in 2006 as the runner-up on the fourth season of *Australian Idol*. Following her success on the show, she signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. Her debut live album, *The Journey* (2007), reached number four on the ARIA Albums Chart. She briefly joined the girl group Young Divas in 2007 before releasing her debut studio album, *Been Waiting* (2008). This album featured the number-one single “Burn” and became the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009. Her second studio album, *Get ‘Em Girls* (2010), showcased a more R&B sound, producing four platinum singles. Mauboy’s third album, *Beautiful* (2013), included top-ten hits like “Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up)” and “Never Be the Same.”

Beyond music, Mauboy has built a significant acting career. She debuted in *Bran Nue Dae* (2010) and later starred in *The Sapphires* (2012), a role that earned her an AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In 2016, she took on the lead role of Billie Carter in the television drama series *The Secret Daughter*, releasing two soundtrack albums, one of which made her the first Indigenous artist to achieve a number-one album on the ARIA Albums Chart. She represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 and has served as a coach on *The Voice Australia* from 2021 to 2023. In 2025, Mauboy was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards Hall of Fame, coinciding with the launch of her independent label, Jamally.
