John Gretton “Jocko” Willink Jr. was born on September 8, 1971, in Torrington, Connecticut. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 19, beginning a distinguished 20-year career that saw him rise through the ranks to become a lieutenant commander in the Navy SEALs. Willink completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training and earned his trident insignia, serving as an enlisted SEAL with SEAL Team One and SEAL Team Two. Early in his career, he participated in the seizure of the Russian Tanker Volga-Neft-147, which was carrying Iraqi oil in violation of a United Nations embargo. He later earned his commission via Officer Candidate School and completed multiple deployments across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
A significant milestone in Willink’s military career was his deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. As commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, he led his unit in fierce combat against Iraqi insurgents during the Battle of Ramadi. For his exemplary service and leadership, Willink was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star Medal. Beyond his combat roles, he also served as a Navy SEAL instructor, contributing to the training and development of future SEALs. He retired from the Navy in October 2010, marking the end of a decorated and impactful military tenure.
Following his retirement, Willink transitioned his combat-tested leadership philosophy to the civilian world. He co-founded Echelon Front, a management consulting firm that provides leadership training and seminars. Alongside his business partner Leif Babin, he co-authored several best-selling books, including “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win” (2015) and “The Dichotomy of Leadership.” Willink also launched “The Jocko Podcast” in 2015, which has become a popular platform for discussing leadership, discipline, and lessons from military and business. Additionally, he instructs Brazilian jiu-jitsu, co-owns Origin USA (a manufacturer of lifestyle apparel, nutrition supplements, and fitness equipment), and has written a children’s book series, “Way of the Warrior Kid.”
