Zachary E. Posen was born on October 24, 1980, in New York City, and was raised in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. His early interest in fashion was evident, with an internship at Nicole Miller during his sophomore year of high school and attendance at Parsons The New School for Design’s pre-college program. At age 18, Posen was accepted into the womenswear degree program at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. In 2001, a gown he created from thin leather strips and dressmaker hooks and eyes was exhibited by the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of their “Curvaceous” exhibition. His talent was recognized early when a dress he made for supermodel Naomi Campbell circulated among fashion industry figures.
Upon returning to New York in 2001, Posen established an atelier in his parents’ living room. That same year, he presented a capsule collection at GenArt’s “Fresh Faces in Fashion New York 2001” and received a grant of $20,000. This debut attracted the attention of fashion leaders from LVMH Fashion Group, Christian Dior S.A., and Gucci Group NV, leading to the establishment of his design studio in Tribeca. His designs gained popularity among celebrities such as Natalie Portman, Rihanna, and Kate Winslet. In 2004, Sean John made an investment in Posen’s brand, and he received the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Swarovski’s Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear. Expanding his reach, he released a capsule collection, Zac Posen for Target, in Australian stores in 2008 and partnered with David’s Bridal in 2014 to create Truly Zac Posen, his first official bridal collection.
Posen’s career saw further expansion and evolution with his appointment as Creative Director for Brooks Brothers in 2014, where he worked to modernize their women’s clothing and accessories line until 2020. In 2016, he designed new uniforms for Delta Air Lines’ 60,000 employees. He also served as an official judge on “Project Runway” from season 11 through season 16. In 2019, his company, House of Z and Z Spoke, announced an immediate closure of the label, shortly after major client Barneys New York filed for bankruptcy. However, in February 2024, Posen took on significant new responsibilities as the creative director of Gap and chief creative officer of Old Navy, roles aimed at revitalizing these brands.
