Johannes “Joe” Taslim was born on June 23, 1981, in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. He is of Chinese descent and began studying various martial arts at a young age, including Wushu, Judo, and Taekwondo. He eventually focused on Judo, leading to a distinguished career as a professional athlete. Taslim was a member of Indonesia’s national Judo team from 1997 to 2009, during which he won several medals. His athletic achievements include a gold medal at the 1999 Southeast Asia Judo Championships in Singapore, bronze medals at the 2001 and 2005 Southeast Asian Games, a silver medal at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, and a gold medal in the Men –81 kg class at the 2008 Indonesia National Games.
After retiring from competitive Judo in 2009, Taslim transitioned into acting. His acting debut was in the 2008 film *Karma*. His career gained significant momentum with his role as Sergeant Jaka in the 2011 action film *The Raid: Redemption*. This breakthrough performance led to international opportunities, including his first role in a non-Indonesian film, *Fast & Furious 6* (2013), where he played the villain Jah. He continued to appear in prominent films such as *Star Trek Beyond* (2016) as Manas and *Mortal Kombat* (2021) as Bi-Han / Sub-Zero, a role he is set to reprise in *Mortal Kombat II* (2026).
Taslim has also made a notable impact in television. He starred as Li Yong in the Cinemax action series *Warrior* from 2019 to 2023, appearing in 30 episodes. In 2023, he guested on the TV series *Blindspotting* as Mustafa. His consistent work in both film and television, often showcasing his martial arts capabilities, has established him as an Indonesian actor with a significant international presence. He has been recognized with awards including the Best APAN Star Award at the 2016 APAN Star Awards and Actor of the Year at the 2017 Style Awards.
