Joel Selwood

Joel Anthony Selwood was born on May 26, 1988, in Bendigo, Victoria, into a family deeply involved in sports. Despite overcoming a walking disability as a toddler, Selwood showed athletic talent from a young age, excelling in track and field and football. He joined the TAC Cup competition as a bottom-aged player, earning numerous accolades including Most Valuable Player awards at state and international levels, and selection in the under-18 All-Australian and TAC Cup Team of the Year. A knee injury in his final junior year caused him to fall to Geelong’s first pick at seventh overall in the 2006 AFL draft.

Selwood debuted in the 2007 AFL season, quickly making an impact. He won the AFL Rising Star Award and AFLPA Best First-Year Player Award in his debut season, becoming the first player in VFL/AFL history to win both and play in a premiership within the same year. He was a key member of Geelong’s premiership teams in 2007, 2009, and 2011, serving as vice-captain in the latter. Appointed captain in 2012 at 23, Selwood led Geelong to seven preliminary finals and two Grand Finals during his tenure. He holds records for the most games played as an AFL captain (245) and most wins as an AFL captain (160). His ability to break tackles and earn free kicks, combined with an aggressive playing style and leadership, marked his career.

His career concluded with a fourth premiership in 2022, his first as captain, after which he announced his retirement. Selwood is recognized for his leadership, courage, and consistency, earning the AFLPA Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award four times and the AFLPA Best Captain Award. He famously played in 20 games every full season and averaged over 24 disposals per game. Post-retirement, Selwood has taken on a leadership coaching role with the Melbourne Storm and joined the AFL’s football operations department for 2024. He is also involved in community initiatives, including an ambassadorship for NAB Auskick and the Cotton On Foundation.
