About

Joel Stein was born on July 23, 1971, in Edison, New Jersey. He pursued his higher education at Stanford University, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in English in 1993. During his time at Stanford, he contributed a weekly column to the student newspaper, The Stanford Daily. Following his graduation, Stein relocated to New York City and later to Los Angeles in 2005, establishing the foundation for his extensive career in journalism and writing. His early career included roles as a writer and researcher for Martha Stewart Living, and fact-checking for various publications before he became a sports editor and columnist for Time Out New York, where he worked for two years.

Stein joined Time magazine in August 1997 and continued to write a column for the publication for 19 years, until his final column appeared on November 16, 2017. Throughout his tenure, he wrote 22 cover stories for Time. Concurrently, he also served as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times. Beyond print media, Stein expanded into television, co-producing three TV pilots: an animated series for VH1 and two for ABC. He was also a writer and producer for the sitcom Crumbs. In 2012, he authored the book “Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity.” He has taught humor writing at Princeton University and makes occasional appearances as a commentator on television programs like “I Love the ’80s,” later transitioning to writing for The Hollywood Reporter, The Athletic, and Substack, where he authors “The End of My Career.” In 2023, he began working as an independent writer and creative consultant.

His career is marked by notable columns that generated discussion, such as “Warriors and Wusses” in 2006 for the Los Angeles Times, which expressed his critical stance on supporting troops, and a 2010 Time column about immigration in his hometown that drew both criticism and apologies. In 2013, he penned a Time cover story, “The Me Me Me Generation,” discussing millennials. Stein has been recognized for his work, including being named on Folio:’s list of Thirty Under 30 and Brill’s Content’s annual “Influence List” in 2000. He also played himself in a 2014 episode of “The Neighbors.”
