Joel Ward has had a long and impactful career as a professional footballer, primarily known for his defensive versatility and tenure with Crystal Palace. After signing a professional contract with Portsmouth in July 2008, Joel Ward went on to establish a long and impactful career in professional football, demonstrating remarkable defensive versatility and consistency. He initially gained first-team experience during a loan spell with AFC Bournemouth in August 2008, making his senior debut in a League Cup match against Cardiff City and recording 25 appearances with one goal before returning to Portsmouth. Ward subsequently made his debut for Portsmouth in August 2009 and his Premier League debut for the club in 2010, showcasing his ability to play across the back-line and in midfield.

Ward’s tenure with Crystal Palace saw him establish a remarkable record for the most Premier League appearances for any player in the club’s history. He continued to be a foundational player, serving as club captain for a season in 2023, the same year he signed another one-year contract extension. This was followed by a further contract extension in 2024, keeping him at Selhurst Park until June 2025. During his time, he made over 360 appearances across all competitions for Crystal Palace, culminating in an FA Cup victory with the club in 2025 before departing as a free agent.
