Joel Ward

Joel Edward Philip Ward, born on October 29, 1989, in Emsworth, England, embarked on his football journey with local youth team East Lodge before joining Portsmouth’s academy in 2006. He signed a professional contract with Portsmouth in July 2008. To gain first-team experience, Ward was loaned to AFC Bournemouth in August 2008, where he made his senior debut in a League Cup match against Cardiff City. During his loan spell, he made 25 appearances and scored one goal before returning to Portsmouth.

Upon his return to Portsmouth, Ward made his debut for the club in August 2009. He proved to be a versatile defender, playing across the back-line and even in midfield. In 2012, Ward moved to Crystal Palace for £400,000. He quickly became an integral part of the team, contributing to their promotion to the Premier League in his first season. He established himself as a consistent performer, setting a record for the most Premier League appearances for a Crystal Palace player. Throughout his career at Crystal Palace, he made over 360 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his commitment and reliability until his departure as a free agent in 2025.

Throughout his career, Ward was known for his adaptability, playing as a right-back, centre-back, and occasionally in midfield. He demonstrated strong defensive capabilities and consistently performed for his teams.
