John Bishop

John Bishop was born on November 30, 1966, in Everton, Liverpool, England. He grew up primarily in Runcorn and Winsford, Cheshire, where he attended Murdishaw West Primary School and Brookvale Comprehensive School. Bishop pursued higher education, briefly studying English at Newcastle Polytechnic and later earning a BA in Social Science from Manchester Polytechnic. Before his career in entertainment, he worked as a medical representative for the pharmaceutical company Syntex. He began performing stand-up comedy at the age of 34 in 2000, after his separation from his wife, Melanie Cornall. He credits this unexpected turn in his life, and comedy itself, with eventually leading to a reconciliation and saving his marriage.

Bishop’s comedy career gained significant momentum after he started performing. In 2001, he reached the finals of several major new act competitions, including “So You Think You’re Funny,” the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards, and the BBC New Comedy Awards. He won the City Life North West Comedian of the Year Award that same year. In 2002, he was recognized as Best Newcomer by BBC Radio Merseyside, and in 2004, he received the North West Comedy Award for Best Stand-Up. His television debut was on RTÉ’s topical-comedy show, “The Panel,” in 2007, where he was a regular panelist until 2008. These early successes established his presence in the comedy scene and set the stage for his broader career in media.

Over the years, John Bishop has become a versatile entertainer, expanding his work beyond stand-up to include acting and presenting. He developed and hosted several of his own television shows, such as “John Bishop’s Britain” (2010–2011), “John Bishop’s Only Joking” (2013), “The John Bishop Show” (2015, 2022), and “John Bishop: in Conversation With…” (2016–2018). His acting credits include dramatic roles in Ken Loach’s film “Route Irish” (2010) and Jimmy McGovern’s “Accused” (2010), as well as playing Dan Lewis in “Doctor Who” from 2021 to 2022. Known for his charity work, Bishop notably raised £4.2 million for Sport Relief in 2012 by completing a triathlon. He has also undertaken several successful national arena tours, including “Winging It,” which sold over 500,000 tickets, solidifying his status as one of the UK’s most popular comedians. In 2013, he published his autobiography, “How Did All This Happen?”
