John Donahoe is an American businessman and executive known for his leadership roles across several prominent global companies, transitioning from consulting to e-commerce, cloud computing, and sports apparel.
Donahoe focused heavily on short-term financials at the expense of long-term relationships and innovation. This included trimming Nike's wholesale distribution.
John Donahoe has been CEO of four leading, global companies in four different industries: Bain & Co. (strategy consulting), eBay (online commerce), ServiceNow (cloud-based workflow automation), and Nike (sports footwear and apparel).
John Donahoe was CEO of eBay between 2008 and 2015, and his job just before Nike was as CEO of a cloud computing company.
As President and CEO of ServiceNow, John Donahoe led the cloud company.
John Joseph Donahoe II was born on April 30, 1960, in Evanston, Illinois. His father was an accountant in Chicago. Donahoe graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, in 1978. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Dartmouth College, followed by an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Early in his career, Donahoe gained experience working at a Schlitz beer distribution company, where he joined the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Donahoe spent 20 years at Bain & Company, a global consulting firm, starting as an associate consultant and eventually becoming the firm’s president and CEO in 1999. In March 2005, he joined eBay as president of Marketplaces, focusing on the company’s core business. By 2008, Donahoe was appointed CEO of eBay, a role he held until 2015. During his tenure, he oversaw more than 40 acquisitions, including Shopping.com, StubHub, Gumtree, LoQUo, and Shutl. After leaving eBay, he became involved with ServiceNow, a cloud company, eventually being named its president and CEO in February 2017.
In October 2019, Donahoe was announced as the next CEO of Nike, Inc., succeeding Mark Parker on January 13, 2020. He led Nike until October 2024, at which point he was replaced by Elliott Hill. Donahoe’s leadership at Nike involved navigating the company through the COVID-19 pandemic and implementing a direct-to-consumer strategy, though it also faced criticism regarding its impact on wholesale partnerships and product innovation. In July 2025, Donahoe was named the athletic director at Stanford University, with his role becoming effective on September 8.
