The former Labour politician John Reid, Lord Reid of Cardowan, has held a number of prominent positions in the party, including Home Secretary under Prime Minister Tony Blair. Reid has enjoyed an extensive political career, beginning as a senior researcher for the Labour Party. As his career progressed, Reid quickly became recognised as an influential member of the party and went on to be appointed as the Minister for the Armed Forces in 1997, a position in which he was praised for his key role in the Strategic Defence Review. A strong negotiator, Reid continued his significant contribution to British politics as the Minister for Transport and later Leader of the House of Commons and Secretary of State for Health, cementing his position as a heavyweight figure in parliament. In honour of his contribution to public affairs, Reid was awarded an honorary degree from Stirling University.
In 2010 Reid became a life peer and was awarded the title of Baron Reid of Cardowan. Since becoming a member of the House of Lords, Reid has played a key role in campaigning for a “No” vote in the 2011 AV referendum and opposing Scottish independence. Alongside his notable career as a politician, Reid is an honorary Professor at the University College London and a group consultant to the multinational security services company G4S. In support of the advancement of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation agenda, he is also a member of the cross-party parliamentary organisation Top Level Group. A lifelong football supporter, Reid has acted as the Chairman of the Celtic Football Club since 2007, a position that has seen him praised for his ongoing engagement and enthusiasm.
