John Varvatos was born in 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Allen Park. His family originated from Poulata on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. At the age of 16, he began working in menswear sales at Hughes & Hatcher in Dearborn. He pursued higher education at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan. After graduating in 1980, Varvatos co-founded Fitzgerald’s Men’s Store in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Varvatos joined Polo Ralph Lauren in 1983, marking a significant step in his fashion career. In 1990, he transitioned to Calvin Klein, where he assumed the role of head of menswear design. During his time at Calvin Klein, he oversaw the launch of the men’s collection and the cK brand. A notable contribution during this period was his pioneering of boxer briefs, a hybrid undergarment that gained widespread recognition after a 1992 advertising campaign featuring Mark Wahlberg. In 1995, Varvatos returned to Ralph Lauren, serving as head of menswear design across all Polo Ralph Lauren brands and establishing the Polo Jeans Company.
In late 1999, John Varvatos launched his own company, debuting his inaugural clothing line in New York at the close of 2000. Within months, in September 2000, he opened a freestanding boutique in SoHo. The John Varvatos brand expanded to include various accessories, such as belts, handbags, footwear, eyewear, watches, and fragrances. In 2009, he launched “New York Nights…Direct From the Bowery,” a monthly radio show on Sirius XM. Varvatos became a mentor on NBC’s reality series “Fashion Star” in 2012, and in 2013, a limited edition Chrysler 300 was released in his name. In 2014, he established John Varvatos Records in partnership with Monte Lipman’s Republic label, signing artists like the Zac Brown Band. In September 2023, Varvatos appointed Chief Design Officer at Under Armour.
