About

Nadya Okamoto, born February 11, 1998, in New York City, began her work in menstrual equity at a young age after moving to Portland, Oregon. At 16, she founded PERIOD.org in December 2014, an organization initially named Camions of Care. PERIOD.org focused on distributing menstrual hygiene products, establishing campus chapters across the United States and in numerous other countries, and advocating for the elimination of the tampon tax. Under her leadership, the organization grew significantly, reporting 800 chapters in all 50 U.S. states and 40 other countries, and generating $420,000 in annual revenue by 2018. PERIOD.org became recognized as the largest youth-run non-governmental organization in women’s health by 2019.

Okamoto’s career expanded further in 2017 when she launched an unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the Cambridge, Massachusetts City Council while attending Harvard College. Her focus areas included affordable housing, education equity, and climate change. In October 2018, she published her debut book, “Period Power: A Manifesto for the Menstrual Movement,” through Simon & Schuster, which was included on Kirkus Reviews’ list for Best Young Adult Nonfiction. Her contributions and visibility led to her recognition on lists such as Forbes 30 Under 30 in law and policy (2019), Bloomberg’s 50 Most Influential Ones to Watch (2019), and People Magazine’s Women Changing the World.

In January 2020, Okamoto transitioned from her role as Executive Director of PERIOD.org to an advisory position. Later that year, she co-founded August, a for-profit lifestyle period brand, with Nick Jain. As CEO of August, Okamoto continues to innovate in the menstrual care space, offering direct-to-consumer sustainable period products and implementing initiatives like paying the tampon tax for customers in relevant states. August also developed “Ask August,” an educational platform to support Generation Z in navigating menstruation. The brand successfully raised nearly $2 million in its seed round, with Hannah Grey as a lead investor, further solidifying Okamoto’s impact as an entrepreneur and advocate.
