Johnathon Schaech

Johnathon Schaech was born in Edgewood, Maryland, in 1969. He graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he studied economics. His acting career began in 1991 after signing with Wilhelmina West, Inc., performing in commercials and small film roles. He honed his craft studying under acting teacher Roy London until 1993. Schaech’s early breakthrough occurred in 1993, when he took on the lead role in Franco Zeffirelli’s period drama “Sparrow.” This was followed by a role as the drifter Xavier Red in Gregg Araki’s “The Doom Generation.” In 1995, he gained recognition for his portrayal of Leon in “How to Make an American Quilt,” a role that earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. His career continued to gain momentum with his role as the lead singer of The Wonders in Tom Hanks’ 1996 directorial debut, “That Thing You Do!”, cementing his status as a notable emerging talent in Hollywood.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Schaech demonstrated his range, starring in the 1998 thriller “Hush” and portraying the legendary Harry Houdini in TNT’s 1998 film “Houdini.” For the latter, he received acclaim for performing all of his own magic tricks and stunts. He then diversified his work by appearing with Harvey Keitel in “Finding Graceland” (1999) and reuniting with Gregg Araki for “Splendor,” which premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Schaech also made a significant foray into television, starring as John Maguire in the “Party of Five” spin-off, “Time of Your Life.” In 2000, he showcased his commitment to challenging roles by losing 35 pounds for his part in David Rabe’s play “A Question for Mercy,” an off-Broadway production where he played a Manhattenite dying of AIDS.

More recently, Schaech has taken on lead roles that highlight his enduring presence in the industry. He portrays Sheriff Justin Wise in “Blue Ridge: The Series,” a family crime series that later became a hit streaming on Prime. His work on the series extended beyond acting, as he directed the Season 2 finale, demonstrating his leadership and creative vision behind the camera. He also held a recurring role as Jonah Hex in DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” from 2016 to 2018, and reprised the role in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event in 2019. Beyond acting, Schaech is also an accomplished screenwriter, having co-written multiple screenplays, including “Road House 2” for Sony and “The Washingtonians” for Showtime’s Masters of Horror. He has also developed content based on works by Stephen King.
