Johnny Knoxville was born Philip John Clapp on March 11, 1971, in Knoxville, Tennessee. His early life in Knoxville, where his mother was a Sunday school teacher and his father a car and tire salesman, influenced his inclination towards practical jokes. After graduating high school in 1989, Knoxville moved to California to pursue acting. His initial attempts in traditional acting roles were unsuccessful, leading him to create his own opportunities by writing and pitching article ideas to magazines. An idea involving testing self-defense equipment on himself caught the attention of Jeff Tremaine’s skateboarding magazine, Big Brother. The resulting filmed stunts became part of the Big Brother video series and were foundational to his later career.
Knoxville’s career significantly advanced with the creation of “Jackass.” Working with Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze, he co-created the MTV reality stunt show, which premiered in 2000. Knoxville often served as the de facto leader within the show, originating many of the stunts. The show’s success led to a series of popular feature films, including “Jackass: The Movie” (2002), “Jackass Number Two” (2006), “Jackass 3D” (2010), “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” (2013), and “Jackass Forever” (2022). These projects allowed him to expand his role to include writing and producing, further solidifying his influence in the entertainment industry. His persona, characterized by a blend of humor and a willingness to engage in risky stunts, resonated with audiences.
Beyond “Jackass,” Knoxville has established an acting career with roles in mainstream and independent films. Notable acting credits include “Men in Black II” (2002), “Walking Tall” (2004), “The Dukes of Hazzard” (2005), and “The Ringer” (2005). He also lent his voice to characters, such as Leonardo in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2014) and Randy Cheeks in “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” (2024). In addition to acting, Knoxville co-founded Dickhouse Productions with Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze, which has produced documentaries and television series. He later formed Hello Junior, another production company, in 2014, securing a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures.
