About

Jolyon Carlyle Palmer was born on January 20, 1991, in Horsham, West Sussex, England. The son of former Formula 1 driver Jonathan Palmer, Jolyon pursued a career in motorsport from a young age. He began in T Cars, a championship for young drivers, in 2005, winning the Autumn Trophy in 2006. He then progressed to Formula Palmer Audi in 2007, securing two wins and two pole positions, before continuing his development in the FIA Formula Two Championship from 2009 to 2010, where he achieved five wins and placed second overall in 2010. During his early career, an abdominal injury in 2007 resulted in the loss of a kidney and other significant trauma, but he recovered and returned to racing.

Palmer advanced to the GP2 Series in 2011, joining Arden International. His team changed to iSport International in 2012, where he secured his first GP2 victory in Monaco. In 2013, driving for Carlin, he took two feature race wins, including pole position and fastest lap in Singapore. His breakout year came in 2014 with DAMS, where he won the GP2 Series championship with three races to spare, setting an all-time points record for the series. This achievement led to a test driver role with Force India in 2014 and a reserve driver position with Lotus F1 Team in 2015, where he participated in several Free Practice sessions and a key in-season test where he topped the timesheets.

In 2016, Palmer made his full Formula One debut with the Renault Sport F1 Team, scoring his first World Championship point at the Malaysian Grand Prix. He continued with Renault in 2017 until the Japanese Grand Prix, where he achieved a career-best sixth place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. After his racing career, Palmer transitioned to a media role, joining BBC Radio 5’s Formula One team in 2018 as an expert analyst. He also became a regular columnist for the BBC Sport website and a special contributor to the official F1 website, hosting ‘Jolyon Palmer’s Analysis’. In 2024, he expanded his broadcasting work to include F1 TV and Channel 4, providing color commentary and hosting his own show, further solidifying his position as a respected voice in motorsport analysis.
