About

Jonathan Banks was born on January 31, 1947, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Chillum Heights, Maryland. His early interest in acting led him to pursue a career in entertainment. He attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he was a classmate of Kevin Kline and participated in stage productions, including “The Threepenny Opera.” After graduation, he worked as a stage manager for a touring company of “Hair” in Australia and New Zealand. In 1974, Banks moved to Los Angeles, beginning his professional acting journey with roles in theater and a public service announcement.

Banks established himself as a versatile character actor, often cast in roles as sinister types or villains. His extensive filmography includes supporting roles in films like “The Rose” (1979), “Airplane!” (1980), “Frances” (1982), “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984), “Gremlins” (1984), and “Armed and Dangerous” (1986). A significant career turning point came with his role as FBI Special Agent Frank McPike in the television series “Wiseguy” (1987–1990), for which he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. His work continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in films such as “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory” (1995) and “Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles” (2001), along with guest appearances in various television shows.

Banks gained renewed and widespread recognition for his portrayal of Mike Ehrmantraut in the critically acclaimed AMC series “Breaking Bad” (2009–2013). This role led to a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2013. He reprised the character as a lead in the spin-off series “Better Call Saul” (2015–2022) and the sequel film “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” (2019), securing five additional Primetime Emmy nominations in the same category for his work on “Better Call Saul,” making him the only actor to receive nominations for three different shows in this category, with two being for the same character. His recent work includes voice roles in animated series like “F Is for Family” and “Invincible,” and a notable performance in the 2017 film “Mudbound.”
