Jonathan Polynice Vilma was born on April 16, 1982, in East Harlem, New York City, to Haitian immigrant parents. His family relocated to Coral Gables, Florida, when he was six years old. He attended Coral Gables Senior High School, where he played football alongside future NFL Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore. Vilma continued his football career at the University of Miami on an athletic scholarship, playing for the Miami Hurricanes from 2000 to 2003. During his college tenure, he was a key player on the 2001 National Championship team and consistently led the team in tackles. He earned First-team All-Big East honors three times (2001, 2002, 2003) and was a semi-finalist for the Dick Butkus Award. Off the field, Vilma achieved academic success, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration and being a three-time Academic All-Big East Conference selection.
Vilma’s professional NFL career began in 2004 when the New York Jets selected him as the 12th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, earning the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2004 with 107 tackles, two sacks, and three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. In 2005, he led the NFL in tackles with 169 and was selected for his first Pro Bowl. After sustaining a season-ending knee injury in 2007, Vilma was traded to the New Orleans Saints in 2008. With the Saints, he continued to be a defensive leader, signing a five-year, $34 million contract in 2009. He played a critical role in the Saints’ historic Super Bowl XLIV victory in 2010. During his time with the Saints, he was selected for two more Pro Bowls (2009, 2010).
Following his retirement from professional football, Vilma transitioned into media and business. He became a color analyst for the NFL on Fox and previously worked as a college football commentator and studio analyst for ESPN. In 2017, he was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame. Beyond sports broadcasting, Vilma has engaged in various entrepreneurial ventures and community work. He founded the Jonathan Vilma Foundation to support rebuilding efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, focusing on establishing a charter school. He has also been involved in real estate investments and the technology sector.
