Andre Michael Ward, born on February 23, 1984, in San Francisco, California, began his boxing journey at the age of nine. Raised by his godfather and long-time trainer, Virgil Hunter, after his parents struggled with drug abuse, Ward quickly ascended through the amateur ranks. He secured the Under 19 National Championship in 2002 and was a two-time U.S. National Champion in 2001 and 2003 as a middleweight. His amateur career culminated in a light heavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, making him the first American boxer in eight years to achieve this feat, and finishing with an impressive record of 115 wins and 5 losses.
Ward turned professional in 2004, maintaining an undefeated record throughout his career. He rose to international prominence when he joined the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament in 2009. Here, he captured the WBA super middleweight title from Mikkel Kessler. In 2011, he unified the WBA and WBC super middleweight titles by defeating Carl Froch in the tournament final, an achievement that also earned him The Ring magazine title and the prestigious Fighter of the Year awards from both The Ring and the Boxing Writers’ Association of America. His career continued with successful title defenses against notable opponents like Chad Dawson and Edwin Rodríguez, demonstrating a versatile and intelligent fighting style.
Following a period of inactivity, Ward moved up to the light heavyweight division in 2016. He claimed the unified WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles from the then-undefeated Sergey Kovalev, earning him the Comeback of the Year award by The Ring. He successfully defended these titles in a rematch against Kovalev in 2017 before retiring from boxing with an undefeated professional record of 32-0 with 16 knockouts. In 2021, Andre Ward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, solidifying his legacy as one of boxing’s modern greats. His post-boxing career includes roles as a boxing commentator and in the ‘Creed’ film franchise.
