One of the best known names in football, Jurgen Klopp is a charismatic and hugely successful German football manager and former player. As a master tactician, he is often regarded as one of the best managers in the world. Forging his reputation at Borussia Dortmund, Klopp developed a successful footballing tactic known as Gegenpressing now used widely in European football. In 2019 he famously steered Liverpool FC to victory as winners of the Champions League title, followed by victory against Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.
Born in Stuttgart, Klopp spent the majority of his professional playing career at German club Mainz 05, becoming a fan-favourite as a player and launching his managerial career at the same club. His talent as a manager became evident in his first full season in 2001-02, when he guided the club to a fourth place finish in their league. Two seasons later he went on to lead Mainz to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history, ending a 41-year wait.
Klopp’s talent began to be noticed by larger German clubs including champions Bayern Munich, but it was Borussia Dortmund where Klopp took on the role of manager, finding success in his first season with the club after defeating Bayern Munich to lift the 2008 German Supercup. Klopp stayed with the club for seven successful years, achieving back to back Bundesliga titles and reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2013.
In 2015, Klopp moved to Anfield bringing his unique style of management to English football, guiding Liverpool to lift the Champions League title in 2019. After narrowly missing out to Manchester City in the 2018-19 season, Klopp now has his sights firmly set on the Premier League title.
