Born on August 10, 2000, in Windsor, CO, Sophia Smith has established herself as a prominent figure in professional soccer. Her career began early, earning her first Senior National Team call-up in 2017 at the age of 16. Smith played two seasons at Stanford University, contributing to the Cardinal’s 2019 NCAA Championship victory. She subsequently forewent her remaining collegiate eligibility to enter the professional ranks, where she was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by Portland Thorns FC in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. Her professional debut was delayed due to injury and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smith’s impact on the field has been significant. She became the first player born in the 2000s to earn a cap for the USWNT in November 2020. In 2022, she had a notable season, leading the USWNT in scoring with 11 goals and being voted NWSL MVP, the youngest player in league history to achieve this award at 22. She also led Portland Thorns FC to the 2022 NWSL Championship, where she was named MVP of the Championship Game. Her achievements were recognized with the 2022 BioSteel U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year award, making her only the fifth player to win both the U.S. Soccer Young and Senior Player of the Year awards, having previously received the Young Female Player of the Year in 2017. Her international career includes scoring twice at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, helping the USA qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Sophia Smith has continued to achieve milestones at both club and international levels, securing an Olympic Gold Medal in 2024. Her early career also includes appearances in youth World Cups, scoring three goals and adding one assist for the USA at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and playing in all three matches at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Away from soccer, Smith enjoys reading, interior design, and spending time with her family, including her niece and nephew. She is a proponent of mental health, guided by her personal motto, “Protect Your Peace.”
