Keegan Darryl Petersen was born on August 8, 1993, in Paarl, Cape Province, South Africa. His professional cricket career began in February 2012 with Boland. Throughout his domestic career, Petersen has played for several prominent South African teams, including the Cape Cobras, Knights, and Northern Cape. He is known for his right-handed batting, and has also served as an occasional wicket-keeper and leg-break bowler. His consistent performance in domestic cricket led to significant achievements, such as being the leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 CSA 4-Day Franchise Series, where he accumulated 923 runs in nine matches.

Petersen’s international career with the South Africa national cricket team began in June 2021 with his Test debut against the West Indies. Prior to this, he had received multiple call-ups to the Test squad, demonstrating his potential and consistent form. He was notably added to the squad for series against England in December 2019 and Sri Lanka in December 2020. Despite a temporary withdrawal from the Sri Lanka series due to testing positive for COVID-19, he rejoined the Test squad for subsequent series against Pakistan and the West Indies.
