Keith Olbermann was born on January 27, 1959, in New York City. His passion for baseball emerged early, leading to his first book, “The Major League Coaches,” published at age 14. He began his broadcasting career while still in high school as a play-by-play announcer for WHTR. Olbermann pursued higher education at Cornell University, graduating at age 20 with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications arts. His professional journey commenced with UPI and RKO Radio, followed by a stint at New York’s WNEW, before joining CNN in 1981.
Olbermann continued to build his career in sports broadcasting, serving as a sports anchor in Boston at WCVB-TV in 1984, before moving to Los Angeles where he worked for KTLA-TV and KCBS-TV. During his time in California, he earned 11 Golden Mike Awards for Best Sportscaster and Best Sportscast, and was recognized as Sportscaster of the Year three times. A significant turning point in his career came in 1992 when he was part of the team that launched ESPN Radio, and subsequently joined ESPN SportsCenter alongside Dan Patrick, a partnership that lasted until 1997.
Following his impactful time in sports, Olbermann transitioned to news and political commentary. He joined MSNBC, hosting “The Big Show with Keith Olbermann” and “White House in Crisis.” After a period at Fox Sports, he returned to MSNBC in 2003 to host “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” a highly-rated political commentary show. The 2001 terrorist attacks profoundly shaped his perspective, leading him to deliver impactful reporting from the site for ABC Radio, for which he received an Edward R. Murrow Award. His career has also included ventures into digital media, hosting web series for GQ and launching his own podcast on iHeartMedia.
