Kelly Macdonald

Kelly Macdonald was born on February 23, 1976, in Glasgow, Scotland. She was raised in Glasgow by her mother following her parents’ divorce and has one brother. Before her acting career began, Macdonald worked as a barmaid in Glasgow. Her entry into acting was unconventional; she responded to an open casting call for a film, which led to her breakout role as Diane in “Trainspotting” (1996). This role garnered her a BAFTA Scotland Award nomination and initiated her successful career in the entertainment industry.

Following her debut, Macdonald established herself with roles in various notable film and television productions. Her filmography includes a supporting role in “Elizabeth” (1998) and a significant part as Mary Maceachran in Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (2001). A pivotal moment in her television career was her role as Gina in the BBC One film “The Girl in the Café” (2005), for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award and received a Golden Globe Award nomination. She continued to receive critical acclaim for her portrayal of Carla Jean Moss in the Coen brothers’ “No Country for Old Men” (2007), earning her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

In the 2010s, Macdonald further solidified her presence in American television with her role as Margaret Schroeder in the HBO period crime drama series “Boardwalk Empire” (2010–2014) across five seasons, which earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. She also lent her voice to Princess Merida in the Disney/Pixar animated film “Brave” (2012) and appeared as Helena Ravenclaw in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” (2011). In more recent years, she has taken on prominent roles such as DCI Joanne Davidson in the sixth series of the BBC’s “Line of Duty” (2021) and is set to appear in projects like the Netflix thriller “Dept. Q” (2025) and the HBO series “Lanterns” (2026).
