About

Kevin Systrom was born on December 30, 1983, in Holliston, Massachusetts. His early interest in computer programming was sparked by playing video games and creating his own levels. He attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, and later Stanford University, graduating in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in management science and engineering. During his time at Stanford, he participated in the Mayfield Fellows Program and also studied photography in Florence, an experience that would later influence his entrepreneurial ventures. After graduating, Systrom worked at Google for two years as a product marketer, contributing to products like Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs, and Spreadsheets. He left Google seeking greater opportunity and eventually developed a prototype for a location-based sharing app called Burbn.

In 2010, Systrom co-founded Instagram with Mike Krieger. The initial idea for Instagram evolved from Burbn’s photo-sharing feature, inspired by his girlfriend’s reluctance to post photos that didn’t look good enough when taken with an iPhone 4 camera. Systrom’s solution was the creation of filters, including the now-famous X-Pro II filter still used today. Within two weeks of securing seed funding from Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, Instagram was launched. The platform quickly gained traction, reaching 1 million users within a month and over 10 million users a year later. In April 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock, a significant sum for a company with only 13 employees at the time. Systrom remained CEO of Instagram, overseeing its growth to approximately 1 billion monthly users.

Under Systrom’s leadership, Instagram expanded its features and solidified its position as a major media company. He left Instagram in September 2018. Following his departure from Instagram, Systrom continued to engage in entrepreneurial activities. In 2021, he became a backer and director of the Ajax I SPAC, which subsequently took the online car marketplace Cazoo public. In 2023, Systrom reunited with co-founder Mike Krieger to launch Artifact, an AI-powered personalized news feed app. Artifact was acquired by Yahoo in early 2024, integrating its technology into Yahoo’s news products. His career trajectory highlights a consistent focus on innovation in digital communication and media.
