Khairul Anuar Mohamad was born on September 22, 1991, in Kemaman, Terengganu, Malaysia. He began his journey in archery in 2003 and made his international debut in 2011. His early career quickly saw him gain recognition, particularly in 2011 when he participated in the FITA Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Shanghai, China. During this event, he became the first Malaysian archer to win a medal in an individual World Cup event, securing a silver medal after reaching the finals of the men’s individual recurve.
In the same year, Khairul achieved further success at the 2011 Asian Archery Championships in Tehran, Iran. He contributed to Malaysia’s two gold medals, winning the men’s individual event by defeating Japan’s Hideki Kikuchi, and also being part of the Malaysian team that won the men’s team event against China. His consistent performance led to his participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he reached the quarter-final stage in the individual event. He continued to represent Malaysia at the elite level, including the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, making a total of three Olympic appearances.
A significant career milestone occurred in 2019 at the World Archery Championships, where Khairul earned a silver medal in the individual event. This achievement marked the first time a Malaysian archer secured a medal at the World Championships. This performance also qualified a spot for a Malaysian archer at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Following this success, he was shortlisted for World Archery’s Male Athlete of the Year award for recurve archers.
