Kimi-Matias Raikkonen, born on October 17, 1979, in Espoo, Finland, began his racing career at an early age, competing in karting from the age of 10. His talent quickly became apparent, leading to multiple national titles before he transitioned to junior formulae. Despite limited experience in car racing, Raikkonen rapidly rose through the ranks, winning two British-based Formula Renault championships following a swift succession of victories in Finnish, Nordic, and European karting. In 2000, with just 23 car races under his belt, his exceptional performance in a test for the Sauber Formula One team led to an F1 contract for the 2001 season, a move that generated debate given his brief professional car racing background. He quickly silenced critics by scoring a point in his debut, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career.
Raikkonen’s Formula One journey included significant periods with McLaren (2002-2006) and Ferrari (2007-2009, 2014-2018). His tenure at McLaren saw him finish second in the championship twice (2003 and 2005) and secure nine race victories, despite often driving cars with reliability issues. A pivotal moment came in 2007 when, in his inaugural season with Ferrari, he dramatically won the Constructors’ Championship by a single point in the final race in Brazil. Following a temporary departure from Formula One at the end of 2009, during which he explored the World Rally Championship (2009-2011) and NASCAR (2011), Raikkonen made a successful return to F1 with the Lotus F1 Team in 2012, finishing third overall in the championship and clinching a memorable victory in Abu Dhabi. He continued to demonstrate his enduring skill throughout his second stint with Ferrari and later with Alfa Romeo Racing (2019-2021), retiring from Formula One in 2021 after a record 349 starts, 21 wins, and 103 podiums.
Beyond Formula One, Raikkonen’s diverse motorsport pursuits included the World Rally Championship from 2009 to 2011, where he competed in a full-time capacity with the Citroën Junior Team and later as a privateer with ICE 1 Racing. He also ventured into NASCAR, making appearances in the Truck Series and Cup Series in 2011, 2022, and 2023. Post-retirement from F1, he assumed the role of team principal for the Kawasaki Racing Team in the Motocross World Championship in 2022, showcasing his continued involvement in high-performance motorsport.
