Michael John Flanagan, born on October 7, 1962, in Whitechapel, East London, and raised in Bethnal Green, navigated various paths before finding his calling in comedy. His early life involved diverse experiences, including working as a fish porter at Billingsgate Fish Market, spending summers as a kitchen porter on Fire Island, New York, and furniture making. He later returned to education at 25, earning a GCSE in English, undertaking a foundation course in Arts and Social Sciences, and completing a degree at City University at 29. Though he trained as a teacher, he ultimately decided against pursuing it as a career, citing dissatisfaction with the school system.
Flanagan embarked on his professional comedy career in 1997 after attending a comedy course. His talent quickly gained recognition, leading to appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe with the ‘Big Value Comedy Show’ in 2001 and co-headlining with Nina Conti in 2003. His first full-length solo show, ‘What Chance Change?’, debuted in 2006, and he received a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2007. This period marked a significant turning point, establishing him as a rising star in the comedy circuit. His distinctive style, blending working-class observations with sharp wit, resonated with audiences.
His career further accelerated with extensive television and radio work. He became a regular on Radio 2’s ‘Out to Lunch’ in 2008 and appeared on ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ in 2009. Flanagan presented his own four-part series for Radio 4, titled ‘Micky Flanagan: What Chance Change?’ in 2010. The same year, he performed on ‘Live at the Apollo’ and the ‘Royal Variety Performance’. He became a frequent guest on panel shows such as ‘Mock the Week’ (2010-2012), ‘8 Out of 10 Cats’ (2012), ‘A League of Their Own’ (2012, 2014, 2015), and served as a team captain on ‘The Mad Bad Ad Show’ (2012) and ‘I Love My Country’ (2013). His critically acclaimed ‘The Out Out Tour’ (2010-2011) and ‘An’ Another Fing…’ (2017) were significant commercial successes, with the latter playing to over 600,000 people and breaking box office records. After a sabbatical in 2015 due to work-related stress, Flanagan returned to continued success, releasing his new show ‘If Ever We Needed It…’ in 2023.
