About

Kirsten Lindsey O’Brien was born on February 23, 1972, in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. She pursued her education in media and communications at the University of Central England in Birmingham, graduating in 1993. Her career in broadcasting began in 1995 at Tyne Tees Television, where she made her debut presenting a children’s science program. In 1996, O’Brien joined the BBC, presenting continuity links for CBBC. She gained significant recognition during her three-and-a-half years there for her partnership with the puppet Otis the Aardvark. This collaboration extended to the 1997 Saturday morning spin-off, *Saturday Aardvark*, which was specifically built around their on-screen dynamic.

After leaving the CBBC on-air presentation team in 1999, O’Brien remained a regular presence in children’s television and radio. She co-hosted the art program *SMart* from 1999 to 2009, along with its spin-offs, *SMart on the Road* and *SMarteenies*, the latter for the pre-school CBeebies channel. She also contributed to radio with BBC 7’s *Little Toe Radio Show*. Her career progressed to include pantomime, playing Peter Pan in 2004, and successfully participating in a lumberjack competition for the BBC series *Bring It On* in the same year. O’Brien also ventured into comedy, performing sketch shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, including *Kirsten O’Brien – Confessions of a Children’s TV Presenter* in 2007.

Throughout her career, O’Brien has made numerous television appearances beyond children’s programming, including guest spots on Stephen Merchant’s BBC Radio 6 Music show, *Through the Keyhole*, and *Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive*. In 2009, she filmed *Kirsten’s Topless Ambition*, a BBC3 documentary exploring media pressures on female presenters. She also showcased her competitive spirit by winning *The World’s Toughest Driving Tests* in 2010, driving a Romanian TR-85 combat tank. O’Brien moved into radio broadcasting in 2013, co-presenting the Breakfast program on Heart Wiltshire, and later joined BBC Radio Berkshire in 2019, eventually becoming a main presenter before transitioning to BBC Radio 2 as a traffic and travel presenter in May 2026. She also won *Celebrity Mastermind* in January 2025 and has appeared on *Pointless Celebrities* and *Richard Osman’s House of Games*.
