Burna Boy became the first artist from Africa to perform at the UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show by Pepsi. This performance took place at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, in front of more than 71,412 supporters and an audience of over 700 million people.
Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. His musical journey began early, creating beats with FL Studio. After pursuing higher education at the University of Sussex and Oxford Brookes University in the UK, he returned to Nigeria, undertaking an internship at Rhythm 93.7 FM before launching his music career in Lagos. He gained initial recognition in 2012 with “Like to Party,” the lead single from his debut studio album, *L.I.F.E* (2013). This album sold 40,000 copies on its release day, showcasing early commercial success and critical acclaim for its production inspired by Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Bob Marley.
In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group, leading to his major label debut album, *Outside*, in 2018. This album, described as a mixtape, incorporated Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, and road rap, earning him Album of the Year at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. His career saw significant international growth in 2019, winning Best International Act at the BET Awards and being named an Apple Music Up Next artist. His fourth studio album, *African Giant* (2019), was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best World Music Album and won Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards. The album was supported by six singles, including “Ye,” which was notably listed as one of the biggest songs of 2018 by Nigerian publications.
Burna Boy’s global ascent continued with his fifth album, *Twice as Tall* (2020), which won the GRAMMY for Best World Music Album, marking a historic achievement. This album, executive-produced by Diddy and his mother Bose Ogulu, debuted at number one on the Billboard World Albums Chart. In 2022, his sixth studio album, *Love, Damini*, became the highest-debuting Nigerian album on the Billboard 200, and the highest-charting African album in France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. He received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic plaque in 2022 for his musical accomplishments. In 2023, he became the first African artist to headline and sell out a stadium show in the United States at Citi Field in New York and was recognized by Billboard as the top Afrobeat artist of the year. His song “Higher” received a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards.
