Leah Thomas is the influential ecofeminist behind the girl Green Girl Leah blog and one of the co-founders of the inspiring Intersectional Feminist collective. She has been named as an activist of note by the likes of Time, Insider, Marie Claire, InStyle, and Ebony and has also been featured on major networks such as ABC, CNN, and NBC, as well as in publications such as The Washington Post, Vogue, Elle, and more. Her first book, The Intersectional Feminist: How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression to Protect People and Planet, was published in August 2022.
Thomas, who has a social media outreach of well over a quarter of a million across Instagram and Twitter, first coined the phrase “intersectional environmentalism” in 2020, in the wake of the horrific murder of George Floyd. Already a well-known eco-activist, her assertion that environmentalists had to ally with anti-racists — because the two issues are inextricably linked — went viral and led directly to the founding of the IE platform. Now with a huge following and growing influence of its own, IE is working towards offering certification for businesses as a way of holding power accountable and a way of tackling green- and BLM-washing.
Thomas expresses her passion for the planet through her other major love: writing. She recently published a limited fanzine called Earth as Love, which featured her musings and poetry on the nature of love and Mother Earth. She is also heavily involved with the Earth Sessions series of community-driven climate justice concerts.
