Leyna Bloom was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a Filipina mother and an African American father. Early in her life, Bloom discovered her identity as a woman and was supported by her father through her transition. A trained dancer, she began taking dance classes in sixth grade and performed on the American Ballet Theater stage with Misty Copeland by age 14. She received a full dance scholarship to the Chicago Academy for the Arts as a teenager. However, she chose to pursue her authentic self over a traditional path, dropping out of the Academy when the men’s scholarship did not align with her identity as a woman. Subsequently, Bloom moved to New York City, where she experienced homelessness. During this period, she worked at a restaurant during the day and competed in the underground ballroom scene at night, voguing and winning cash prizes, which provided both acceptance and a community.
Bloom’s career began to flourish as transgender visibility increased in media. In October 2017, she achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first openly transgender woman of color to appear in Vogue India. Her acting career gained prominence when she led the feature film “Port Authority” in 2019, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. This marked the first time a transgender woman of color held a leading role in a film at the festival. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the film provided a platform to represent marginalized communities. In March 2021, Bloom made history again as the first openly transgender Black and Asian-American model to be featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, further breaking barriers in the fashion industry.
Throughout her career, Bloom has consistently used her platform for advocacy. She has modeled for major brands such as Dior, H&M, Moschino, and Tommy Hilfiger, and has walked runways at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. Beyond her work in fashion and entertainment, Bloom is a public speaker and passionate activist, addressing topics of diversity, inclusion, and climate change at various institutions, including Ivy League schools. Her career demonstrates a consistent commitment to authentic representation and social change.
