Liam Benjamin Pitchford was born on July 12, 1993, in Chesterfield, England. He began his table tennis career at the age of eight. His early achievements include winning the British Home Countries Championship in 2009. Pitchford quickly progressed through national ranks, securing titles at U14, Cadet, U21, and Senior levels in singles, as well as various doubles titles. This early success set the foundation for his professional career.
PITCHFORD’s professional journey saw him transfer to the German club TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen in 2011, competing in the top division, the Bundesliga, after a season with FC Tegernheim in the second division. This move brought him international exposure and experience. In 2011, he notably defeated World number nine Vladimir Samsonov and World junior number three Wu Jiaji, leading to his ranking as number one in England and a career-high World ranking of 171. He made his Olympic debut at the London 2012 Games as part of the Team GB squad. In 2014, he played a key role in the England men’s team securing promotion to the top level of world table tennis at the World Team Championships in Japan. PITCHFORD became the first table tennis player to represent Team GB at four Olympic Games, participating in London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.
Throughout his career, PITCHFORD has accumulated numerous medals, particularly at the Commonwealth Games, including gold in men’s doubles in 2018 and 2022, and multiple silver and bronze medals across team, singles, and mixed doubles events. A significant career highlight occurred at the 2018 Bulgaria Open, where he defeated current Olympic and World champion Ma Long in a seven-set match. This victory contributed to his highest world ranking of No. 12 in August 2019. In 2020, he had a strong showing at the Qatar Open, reaching the final and defeating the then-reigning world number one, Xu Xin, in the semi-finals, before ultimately losing to Fan Zhendong. In 2024, Pitchford was the top pick for the Florida Crocs in the Major League Table Tennis Draft. He continued his success in 2025 by winning his seventh national Men’s Singles title and becoming the first English player to win a WTT singles title at the WTT Feeder Manchester.
